United head into the match in second place, nine points behind Chelsea, but still able to win the Premiership, even if that outcome is looking incredibly unlikely.
"If we win it's mathematically possible, but they are in the driving seat and I don't think there's any doubt about that," Ferguson told reporters on Friday.
"They can get a point in one of the next three games so it's difficult to see how we are going to win the league, although you never know.
"We are not giving up in terms of trying to win the game."
Ferguson last brought the title to Old Trafford back in 2003, and despite talk of the end of United's dominant era having dogged the fiery Scotsman all season, he is convinced that his side's recent impressive form bodes well for next season.
"Our form over the last two or three months has told me and told my players - because there is a great optimism about the place - and all the other teams that we will be there next year," he said.
"There's no question about that. We are improving and we should be in a good position next year.
"If we get a reasonable bill of health it must give us a massive chance. It only shows when we get a reasonable squad ready and playing, how good we are," Ferguson concluded.
